Paris Is Always A Good Idea

My favorite author is Earnest Hemmingway.

His style of writing is what my books are modeled on.

At a young age I had that seed of being a writer planted by Hemmingway’s works which was then nurtured by other books that I read.

One thing that stood out to me was that he wrote about the places where he was living or had lived.

His short stories about the woods and fishing are

When I tell people I have written a book most people say, “I could never do that” or “I wish I could write a book”.

For years I had those same thoughts.

I loved to read and was a frequent visitor to the library. Once I had exhausted all the books by one author I would look for another author.

In school I waded through basic English but it was not my favorite subject. I would rather study math or history or physics.

I dreaded taking English my senior year of High School as I knew it would be a very involved study of sentence structures and how to diagram them.

Karma stepped in....

Research or How To Obey The Rules Of Authenticity.

As I am writing, ideas come to me for the story I am working on. Most times I have no real facts about the idea and use research to make the facts fit the idea.

Some authors have the benefits of having been to the location they are writing about. It adds authenticity to your story to be able to give correct descriptions of the structures or landscape as the backdrops to your story.

On first hearing these words you might think that there is no connection between these two items.

Without any scientific degrees to my name I can only present some thoughts and observations that I have made through the years.

Current news is full of stories about the State of the Weight of the Nation and the theories and blame for the poor health of the masses would fill volumes.

Since the issue persists I think the answer has escaped detection to date.

I think I know (or at least have an opinion) as to why.

Earnest Hemmingway - Why He Is One Of My Favorite Authors

One of my favorite authors is Earnest Hemmingway.

I enjoy his style of writing and have traveled the world reading his books he allowed me to paint the pictures as I read his books. I became friends with the characters in his books.

It was like reading about someone you know.

Earnest Hemmingway in one of his books talks about when he was writing he would leave some of the story unwritten. When he came back to write the next time he would start writing the part that he saved from the time before.

This helped him get in the grove he was not starting from scratch each day. I have been using this technique and find it to be a very helpful.

I stop writing when I feel good with what I have written that day. It maybe three pages or twenty pages completed. I find that way I am making progress and not stressing myself about how many words I did.

It IS a Wonderful Life!!

Watching the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, the other day stirred my mind.

If you have not seen the movie, you are missing an excellent film; the story shows the lead character what would have happened if he had not existed. He saw how many people he had touched even people he had not met directly and decided that he did not want to die.

Outside of a movie it is harder to see the sphere that we affect. Myself I get caught up in the day to day task and my own goals that take up the day. Since you rarely get the feedback from others who are also caught up in their lives it usually does not come to mind. I am surprised when I get complemented about something I have done.

Many times I can barely remember the specifics of what happened, yet the person was impacted enough to say something about what happened. The only truth that I have found is to be yourself and be aware that there are other people around you.

If you are doing the things that really make you happy in life you will find that you are positively affecting those around you.

It would be nice to be able to see a movie version of our lives but that only happens in Hollywood.

Well back to writing.

Cocoa Dolci in Wichita Kansas. For Me, It Is Like Hemingway said "This is a clean and pleasant cafe. It is well lighted."

I have found a new place to work on my books.

I take my laptop and head to Cocoa Dolce, a local gourmet chocolate establishment.

They moved to a larger space in Bradley Fair that is full of chairs and sofas that is bright with light from the large windows.

I can fulfill my coffee and chocolate desires while I write.

The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

The staff smile and make you feel like you are a guest in their home.

Most of the ladies have worked there for years and it is like seeing an old friend every time you walk in.

Cocoa Dolce reminds me of a line from a Ernest Hemingway short story,
“This is a clean and pleasant cafe. It is well lighted.”

The store has a character that keeps coming back to the café.

That is what Cocoa Dolce is.....a place to keep coming back to.

Beth Tully, the owner creates amazing chocolates and with that inspiration as a background, I find it easy to write.

Welcome to My Blog

When I was young I read tons of books from all genres.

It never occurred to me that I would write a story, let alone a book or for that matter, mutliple books. And yet, here I am, author of multiple books.

My English teachers I'm sure would be surprised. Not only have I written these books, but amazingly, many people are buying and reading them. Even other authors I admire like my books. Go figure.

As for English classes when I was young, actually I did not like them.

All the rules and sentence diagramming seemed a waste of time.

My senior year of high school was spent preforming plays, the drama teacher was teaching our English class and we did not have to diagram one sentence. Yeah!

Later in life, when I was 22, I started writing down bits of stories and prose.

Most of them did not turn into anything.

Then the idea of "Beyond Time" came to me and the whole story grew in my mind.

It was written in short spurts when the story would flow on the keyboard. It was finally completed and I still did not think about the idea of publishing it.

With much encouragement from my wife and friends I finally published the book.

I feel a great sense of accomplishment and yet amazement about all this.

Currently, I'm happily working on the 6th book in the series and have two other books partially done that are on completely different subjects.
